Disciples who are Mentors

Being a mentor has become ‘big business’ even in the Christian arena.  Coaching and mentoring.  This is the need and language of the day.  To mentor by definition is to be a wise counselor, advisor or teacher.  To coach is one who teaches or trains–obviously these definitions lack something and we could add encourager, challenger, motivator.  Languages are constantly changing and in biblical terms we could collect them all in the language of the disciple.  Jesus said if we choose to be disciples we would also make disciples.

The lifestyle of a disciple who is a mentor is first and foremost a role model, they share experiences with the mentee and care about them.  They build a progressive level of trust and ask them the deeper questions of life.  A mentor will always challenge them pushing them to become more than they are and connect them with others whose relationship will enhance their lives as disciples of Christ.  Discipleship and mentoring are the two way streets of learning from each other and whereever possible opening the doors for new experiences and opportunities to develope their gifting, their talents and their Christ like witness.

Do you have a mentor? – someone to listen, someone to care enough to challenge you, someone to share with?  Jesus said, “Follow me…”  I will share with you the secrets of life, do you need to make decisions and fear lest you make them wrong ones? “…Christ…in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” [Colossians 2:3]  He has promised to mentor you so that you can mentor others and in the process He will give you a grand purpose.  To be a disciple that mentors disciples!
